Critical illness and treatment in an intensive care unit (ICU) is known to have long-term consequences, particularly for patients who have been in ICU for more than a few days.

ICUsteps, the United Kingdom’s only intensive care patient support charity, have produced “A guide to intensive care”. In consultation with critical care professionals, the guide was written by ex-patients from the patient perspective.

We know how important it is to have information at such a difficult time. Through the uncertainty and distress that can come with being critically ill, it can be a great relief to know what to expect or that what youre experiencing is normal for someone in your position.

Written in plain English, the guide gives an introduction to critical care. It lets patients and relatives know of some of the physical and psychological issues that patients may face in their recovery and where they can turn if they need help.

The guide also has the endorsement of the Department of Health and is used by over 40% of intensive care units in the UK.
